Description
The Old Roanoke River Lighthouse is the restoration of the original lighthouse built after a lightship guiding the area was destroyed by the confederates.
Following the conflict, work on Roanoke River Lighthouse commenced near the mouth of the river to replace the lightship. The design of the screwpile lighthouse was very similar to others used in North Carolina's Pamlico, Albemarle, and Croatan Sounds: a rectangular structure with a pitched roof surmounted by a lantern room housing a Fresnel lens.
Of interest is the fact that this original lighthouse was purchased by a private individual who used it for a rental house and his own residence. The desire to represent this lighthouse for display resulted in a replica to be built on the water in Edenton, called Roanoke River Lighthouse. After the restoration of the original structure there are now two Roanoke River Lighthouses.
