Description
Early morning and low tide presented this beautiful sight of exposed seaweed on Machias Seal Island, Canada. The misty fog gives it a moody look and I found it rather mesmerizing as I watched the water lap against the partially floating seaweed in the quiet morning.
Machias Seal Island is an island in the Gulf of Maine, about 16 km (9.9 mi) southeast from Cutler, Maine, and 19 km (11.8 mi) southwest of Southwest Head, New Brunswick on Grand Manan Island. It is a neighbor to North Rock. Sovereignty of the island is disputed. Since both Canada and the United States claim sovereignty, anyone born here can claim dual citizenship.
This lovely piece of coast is located on Machias Seal Island off the coast of Maine. As tiny Machias Seal Island is located roughly 19 km (12 miles) from the nearest points in the United States (Cutler, Maine) and Canada (Grand Manan Island), it is understandable that both countries have claimed sovereignty over the island. In terms of navigation, the island was more crucial to Canadian interests, as vessels bound to and from the important ports of Saint John and Saint Andrews frequently passed nearby, but the United States was reluctant to relinquish control of the associated prime fishing grounds.
