Description
This majestic bull elk was captured in his rutting ritual in a wildlife conservatory on the Kenai Peninsula several miles south of Anchorage, Alaska. I was impressed by his pose and the way he pranced in front of my camera.
Autumn's a dramatic and critical time of year for Alaska's elk because this is their annual breeding season, which is also call the rut. Mature bulls, meaning those three to four years or older, may display their impressive antlers and spar with each other in competition for herds or harems of elk cows and calves. Vocalizations made by elk during the rut include piercing bugles, mewing, squealing and barking. If you've never heard an elk bugle in the wild, you've missed one of the most awesome sounds in nature.
I am impressed by his pose and the way he pranced in front of my camera.
