Description
This brown bear was literally walking through a crowd of people watching the salmon run at Allison Point. He walked down to the rocks along the river, went into the water, and promptly came out with a salmon. This was not surprising because the pink salmon were running so thickly you could actually place your hands in the water and come up with a fish.
The Valdez Fisheries Development Association releases around 230 million pink salmon fry from the hatchery each year and the annual return of adult fish is about 10 million, according to hatchery manager Dave Cobb. With a projected return of 15 million, this year’s run is larger than normal, he said.
