Description
An amazing scene of a steamboat setting off on the shimmering water of the Mississippi River under a summer sunset highlights a major spot in downtown Alton, Illinois. In the mural laborers heave barrels of cargo and billowing smoke rises into a topaz sky.
The mural, near the modern Clark Bridge perched high above the Mississippi River, has a Mark Twain feel but comes from the hands of a Greek immigrant, Euripides "Rip" Kastaris.
The scene was created by Alton artist Mike Eckhard. Kastaris was commissioned by the Alton-Godfrey Rotary Club to make it come to life on the side of the Riverbend Head Start and Family Services building on Landmarks Boulevard.
