Description
This group of rural mailboxes made me smile when I saw how crooked they stood by the roadside. They were certainly still in use and I image the people who belong to the boxes barely notice the slant. Surely the mailman had to wonder each day if they would still be standing.
When post boxes were first established the patrons were asked to keep their mailboxes "buggy high" and within easy reach of the carriers. Today, right-hand drive vehicles ensure that carriers can make quick mail exchanges without getting out of their cars or driving on the wrong side of the road. Of course the person collecting the mail often drive on the wrong side of the road to make the collection.
