Description
The Ontonagon Light is a lighthouse located off M-64 near Ontonagon, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on the shores of Lake Superior. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 and designated a Michigan State Historic Site in 1973.
The light tower is three stories high, or 39 feet from the water to the focal plane, and is surmounted by an iron decagonal beacon house, which housed the fifth order Fresnel lens and light. Around the beacon house is a square, iron gallery consisting of a platform and rail.
A spiral stair within the tower provides access to the light, as well as to the basement and upper floor of the main dwelling. A single-story kitchen addition is attached opposite the tower.Three bays of windows are on each side of the structure, with double-hung six-over-six sash windows with stone lintels and sills on the first floor. The structures gable roof has a single hipped dormer on each side.
