Description
This photo was taken in the village of Sloten, a village in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is to the western part of the municipality of Amsterdam. The beautiful windmill, known as Molen van Sloten, is a reminder of Netherland's glory days, when the country boasted more than 10,000 mills. It is one of the last eight surviving windmills of Amsterdam and the only one open to the public.
To visit the windmill which is on the outskirts of the city, you need to take a tram line 2 to its final stop and take a ten minute walk to Sloten.
The house boats are typical of the boats lining the canals and rivers in the Netherlands. In Europe, some of the finest and costliest examples of houseboats can be seen along the canals of Amsterdam, which even has houseboat hotels. Houseboats are very expensive in Amsterdam because of the limited number of moorings; this expense has reduced the likelihood that the approximately 2,400 families that live on the inner waters of Amsterdam will find themselves confronted by new neighbor boats. This photo is a fine example of a typical scene on the canals of Amsterdam.
