Description
These lovely flowers were growing in an English-type garden near a lighthouse in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I was unfamiliar with them and needed help with their identification. The buds look like hollyhocks, but some thought the blooms were more like cosmos. Finally and English friend identified them as mallow or malva which grows quite proficiently in Europe.
The flowers are borne either singly or in clusters in the leaf axils blooming from June to late autumn. They have 5 petals and are white, pinkish or lilac flowers that measure on average, 1 to 1.5 cm across.
