Description
One of the many conical shaped fairy chimneys with dovecote carvings in the soft limestone that we viewed as we hiked the Red Rose Valley trail in Cappadocia, Turkey.
In Cappadocia the dovecotes carved into the upper parts of cliffs or pinnacles almost always face east or south across the valleys. Most of them date from the late 19th or early 20th century, although there are a few from the 18th century. Some dovecots can accommodate as many as one hundred birds. The primary purpose of the dovecots were to collect pigeon droppings which was coveted for its fertilizer value.
