Description
This beautiful black morph version of an Eastern Tiger Swallowtail was photographed in the Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge in Madison, Indiana. Its spotted markings are very outstanding against the black wings. The butterfly captured in my photo is a female because apparently only females morph the black color.
The Eastern Tiger Swallowtail is found in the eastern United States from southern Vermont to Florida west to eastern Texas and the Great Plains. It is common throughout its range, although is rarer in southern Florida and absent from the Florida Keys.
