Description
In the Cappadocian dovecotes there are generally three to four holes side by side or two rows of three holes each, one above the other. The dovecote interior is on the average 5-10m. There are nest-shaped hollows carved around the edges for the birds to lay their eggs, and wooden perches have been placed in them. Even the smallest of the dovecotes can accommodate more than one hundred doves. The dovecotes have been situated at rather high spots in the valleys, and can only be reached by a narrow tunnel from the inside or via a monopod ladder. Most of the dovecotes in Cappadocia are to be found in the Ürgüp Üzengi Valley, the Soğanlı Valley and the vicinty of Uçhisar. These dovecotes have bee carved out of the tuff rock, and like homes for people, these homes were created specifically for the doves.
