Description
The "old" Cape Henry Lighthouse stands stately upon a mound on the grounds of Fort Story, a military base in the state of Virginia. It is called "old" because it was the first lighthouse erected in October 1792 at the entrance of Chesapeake Bay. Today, a mere 350 feet away a new lighthouse, erected in 1881 stands intended to replace the "old".
The old lighthouse was damaged by Confederate forces during the American Civil War, but was repaired by Union forces in 1863, who depended on the light for navigation. After much deliberation and concern for the navigation of the bay area a new lighthouse was built in 1881 to replace the old. However, today the old survives and is a major part of the "Guardians of the Gateway" to the Chesapeake Bay.
The "old" Cape Henry Lighthouse is one of the oldest surviving lighthouses in the United States.
